Abstract

Abstract

Almost all energy needs of the world are met by hydrocarbon resources. The basic feature of these energy resources is that they are exhausted once they are used. This feature causes concerns regarding the exhaustion of energy resources. In the world, the exhaustion of energy resources did not came to the agenda until 1970s. However increases in oil prices in 1973 and 1974 caused concerns regarding the exhaustion of energy resources, and this concern increased in the course of time. At the end, it became generally accepted reality all over the world. On the other hand, how the exhaustion of limited resources will affect the economic life is one of the topics discussed today. In the future, the reserve of the energy resource, the extraction from it, possibilities of secondary production will be the main factors determining the exhaustion of the related energy resource. However it is estimated that technological developments be the driving factor to determine the exhaustion and life of energy resources in the long run. In addition, it has been observed that options for deferral, replacement and shutdown increase the value of the company in the framework of the application of the option pricing theory for energy resources. For this reason, the target would be to utilize optimally energy resources, which are non-renewable in nature.
