Abstract

Abstract

It has been known that financial development is a requirement for the development of economies. However, this situation can vary among developing countries. The crucial factor here is the optimal level of loan volume. Interest rates, on the other hand, are seen as an important cost factor for bank loan users. In the studies conducted on the relationship between loan volume and economic growth, the relationship between these two variables has not been clarified yet. Based on this reason, the present study aims to measure the relationship between the total volume of loans provided by commercial banks, foreign trade balance and interest rates, and economic growth in Turkey, as a developing country, and to contribute to the field literature. In line with this purpose, the Industrial Production Index, total cash loan, commercial interest rate, and coverage ratio of export to import were used by making use of monthly data from the period 01/2005-04/2021. Autoregressive Distributed Lag Bound Test was applied to the data, as a first step, to determine the existence of a cointegration relationship. The results demonstrated the cointegration relationship between loan volume and ecenomic growth. After the cointegration test, the casuality relationship was tested with the Toda Yomamoto Causality analysis. Based on the results of causality analysis, one-way causality was found between the industrial production index and both the commercial interest rate and the export-import coverage ratio, while  two-way causality was observed between interest rates and loan volume.  Additionally, in the causality test, an indirect relationship was found between economic growth and loan volume.
