Abstract

Abstract

Energy, especially in developing countries, has a vital significance in order to meet the needs of this area. The contribution of energy use to economic growth is one of the areas that policy makers focus on. Developing and growing intensive energy, economy of Turkey, because meets a large part of its energy demand through imports, is a country dependent on foreign energy. Therefore, relationship between energy consumption and economic growth is the main determinant of policies to be followed.

The relationship between energy consumption and economic growth has been investigated not only short-term but also long-term plenty studies. However, in this paper unlike other studies, relationship between economic growth, financial development level and energy consumption is researched. Turkey on the basis of the 1980-2014 period, relation between fossil energy consumption (%), financial development (%) and GDP was analyzed by ARDL (Auto Regressive Distributed Lag Model) bound test approach. As a result of the study, in long-term, between financial development, GDP and fossil energy consumption has emerged positive and significant relationship. While 1 % increase in fossil energy consumption increased the GDP by 4.68 %, it was determined that GDP increased by 0.27 %, in case of increase financial development by 1 %.
